Born and raised in Southern California and bitten by the Beatles bug, Larry decided he either wanted to play drums or guitar. Since you can't turn down the drums, Larry's parents pointed him in the guitar direction. It was a good decision! Besides the Beatles, his early influences include the Allman Bros., Alvin Lee, Led Zeppelin, Creedence and of course Bad Company. Larry spent many hours practicing until finally meeting some musicians in high school and formed their first band Badd Weather. Since no one else wanted to sing, Larry took on the duties of singing lead vocals. They played at school dances, parties and eventually got a paying gig at seedy bar in Indio Ca. Getting paid to play music put to rest any doubt Larry had about doing anything else but play guitar!
Larry's vocal skills, as well as his guitar playing had developed and he soon found himself wanting to be in a band capable of 3-part harmonies. He found just such an opportunity in another local band Free and Easy that was known for their vocal abilities. After listing to them play, Larry introduced himself to the bass player and rhythm guitarist (cousins Dana and Steve Reed) telling them that he would love to replace their current lead guitarist. Free and Easy was formed and played for several years all over the southwest and were known for their strong vocal harmonies and diverse repertoire.
After playing in Free and Easy and doing many 3 part harmony songs, Larry was asked to audition for a band of 'older' musicians doing the same type of 3-part harmony, 2-guitar rock and roll. Among these musicians was drummer David Lauser and singer/guitarist Larry Reed who was Dana's older brother. Larry Reed had played with Little Richard and David Lauser had played with Sammy Hagar. The audition went well and Larry joined the band, calling themselves Toys. Toys was a hard rockin' 2-guitar band that played all over California doing cover and original material. They opened for many famous bands including The Knack, Blondie Chapman, The British Lions and Van Halen. Toys was mentored off and on by Sammy Hagar and eventually recorded several original songs. Sadly, differences in direction split the band up and David Lauser ended up joining Sammy Hagar's band, where you can still find him today.
Within a few months of the Toys split, Larry ended up in San Jose as a hired member of 24K. This was a band built around a former staff writer for Warner Brothers records. 24K recorded a demo which was shopped around but ultimately didn't pan out. While recording with 24K, Larry penned a few songs that were more in the pop vein and didn't quite fit in with what 24k was playing. After returning to So. Cal., Larry hooked up with a couple of rhythm-section brothers named Tony and Tom Felicetta. Joined by a second guitarist, they formed the band The Big Shots. This band was a perfect fit for the more pop oriented songs Larry had written. The Big Shots recorded an EP called "Not That Kind of Man" which included the Larry Lawrence penned song of the same name selling 5000 copies. The Big Shots played the Palm Springs/L.A. circuit for many years and had a very strong following opening for Missing Persons and 20/20 several times.
After a few years off to start a family, Larry hooked up with bass player Jay Madore in the cover band Disguise. On drums was Steve Latanation currently of Agent Orange. Continuing to write and record, Larry and Jay got together with guitarist/singer Steve Reed from Larry's old band Free and Easy to form the original band Armed and Dangerous. This was another hard-rockin' 2-guitar band with 3 part harmonies that played in So. Cal. and opened for Pat Travers, Tommy Tutone and The Busboys among others.
Flash forward a few years - past many cover bands, original bands, a publishing contract, MIDI based duos, kids, cars and houses - to the present. Larry continues his un-ending quest towards the next musical challenge by embracing the guitar playing of Mick Ralphs. With a trusty sunburst Les Paul Custom plugged into a 50-watt Marshall amp,Larry finds himself right at home in BAD INC.
