Vocalist Ben Mendoza grew up listening to soul and pop in the late sixties and early seventies. Singing in the laundry room at age 7 screaming Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf was the first indication he wanted to be a performer. He began to pay attention to melody and recognized it as the first and most important element to being a great singer. After hearing him sing, his mother who had her own radio show in Mexico City would drag him to churches and parties and convalescent homes to sing. She would say listen to the little boy with the BIG voice. His first TV appearance was in 1969 on KTTV channel 13 at 4:00 in the morning. Coming from a background of Spanish musicians and growing up as an air force brat proved to be two forces that would ground him to music.
His first band Midnight Magic was in junior high school where, at a very young, age they played to their high school peers. Coincidently during this time, Ben remembers seeing Larry Lawrence play in Free and Easy not knowing their paths would eventually cross. With mostly gospel roots, Ben's influences include: Percy Faith, Al Green and rock and roll singers like the Righteous Brothers, Ian Gillian and Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple - a true blend of rock' n' roll culture.
During the late 70’s Ben co-founded a band called The Dare! which played the Los Angeles, Palm Springs and Inland Empire circuits. It was during this time that he was recruited by John Elefante of the band Kansas to sing on many of his projects - including Breaking the Ice by The Sweet Comfort Band. This led Ben to a later audition as a vocalist for the band Toto. Unfortunately for Ben, the gig went to Fergie Fergison of La Rue…
Staying afloat in Los Angeles Ben did some recording for commercials like Share a Shasta and local spots like Harmon Auto Center and Prime Home Loan. This eventually led to an audition to sing with guitarist Reggie Boyd and, along with bass player Mark Johnson (of the Donnie and Marie show) and drummer Roy Swedeen, were commissioned by a company called Microtech for a year to create a new sounding album. During this time Ben met Tris Imboden of the band Chicago. They played together for nearly a year the two became good friends. The group was produced by Dennis McKay who had produced Pat Travers. Keith Cronnen – also from the Pat Travers band - recorded tracks for the album entitled The Kine.
Ben has 2 published works on CBS, distributed by Word Records and Lexicon Publishing. Gotta Keep Loving you on Maranatha and Maybe This Time on Brian Duncan's solo album Have Yourself Committed. Ben has long since expanded his beliefs and dedicates his life to all roads that lead to love and happiness - with Rock 'n' Roll as the main drive in his life. Seeing how the amazing Paul Rodgers continues to re-invent himself, and how awesome his voice still sounds has inspired Ben. The newly formed band BAD INC fits Ben like a glove and he strives for vocal perfection in his interpretation of Paul Rodgers. Ben lives to sing and firmly believes this: It’s never too late to ROCK!
